NEXT MEETING: WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2018

This is an odd-numbered month, so we will be meeting this Wednesday at 7:30 pm at our (relatively) new venue, the Whittier Ward at 200 East 1500 South in Salt Lake City.

We will sing Cathy Tibbitts's arrangement of Fred Voros’s "Graceful as a Bright-Winged Dove." We will also hear some tune-writing pointers from Lynn Carson, the one member of the group who has a hymn tune published in a hymnal.

If you have something new, please bring it!

In October we will hear from Michael Moody on his experience compiling the 1985 LDS hymnal. Bring questions!

Next meeting: August 30, 2018

The next meeting of the Western Hymn Writers Workshop will be August 30, 2018, at 7:30. Location will be at Salt Lake's Whittier LDS Ward, 1515 South 200 East in downtown Salt Lake. This is a week later than our usual meeting time. Bring something to sing or just come to sing! We hope to see you there.

Paul L. Anderson RIP

In sadness we observe the passing of our beloved friend Paul L. Anderson. Paul was a faithful member of the Western Hymn Writers Workshop and in fact attended the March workshop, with his son, Christian, the night before he died. We workshopped Alan Astin's musical setting for John 11:25, "I am the resurrection and the life." Christian and Paul's wife, Lavina, requested that the members of the Workshop sing that hymn at Paul's funeral. With the generous help of some singers from the Salt Lake City choral ensemble Jubilate, we sang the hymn at the funeral. We will post the hymn on this site.

Paul was a beautiful and creative soul. His untimely death leaves a gaping wound in our soul. Till we meet again, Paul . . .

"SING A NEW SONG"

This year's Sunstone Symposium will include a session featuring new hymns by Fred Voros and Alan Eastman (Alan will be playing piano for the session). In keeping with the theme of this year's symposium, The Least of These: Embracing All, we will showcase hymns addressing social justice and inclusion. Our session, "Sing a New Song," will run from 10:15 am to 11:15 am on Saturday, July 29, in the Saltair Room of the Olpin Student Union, University of Utah. More info here.

This will be a hymn singalong, with no speaking except to set up the hymns. No singing ability is required to attend, though. In fact, you can just listen!

NOTE: A single session conference admission is $15 ($25 at the door). (Sorry we can't let you in for free.)
